If asked which I am, I would most likely respond that I am a city girl.
I love the hustle and bustle of a city. People energize me. I love the sights and the sounds of people talking in various languages and laughing. I love to see the specialty boutiques that a city can offer.
I love the shopping (no surprise there)!
I love the restaurants and the plays and ballets that are offered.
I love the museums and the street artists and musicians.
I don’t like the subways. I don’t like the rats and I don’t like the creepy people that lie lurking in the shadows. I don’t like the pollution or the trash that is thrown about.
It dawns on me that most major cities also have created park like areas within their city.
There is Central Park in New York.
Chicago has Millennium Park that sits next to the water.
London has Kensington Park and Hyde Park, among many others.
The parks are needed. They are a place to slow down and breathe a bit.
Relax, take in a picnic lunch or just stroll through the gardens.
Major cities host major parks. Central Park in New York City is 843 acres!
In that park are lakes, playgrounds, stables, ball fields, a zoo, and so much more!
The gardens are magnificent.
Now, I enjoy gardening, but gardens don’t just happen.
Someone tends to them and prunes them and nourishes them.
The gardener deals with the thorns. Often I wear a thick glove when pruning my rose bushes, but I’ve been known to get a mighty prick from a thorn or two as well.
The “thorns” in life are meant to remind us to look to Him, Our God and Father, Our Creator and Maker. We are in need of Him.
Someone recently pointed out to me that the world began in a garden;
The Garden of Eden, in which Adam and Eve were created. But I never connected the thought that…
as life moves forward…God will one day create a city (not a garden as in Eden). It will be a city, a New Jerusalem.
His new city will have a river and trees.
“The angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse.
There will be no rats or shadows lurking.
“Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”
And unlike our cities today, this city will shine in all purity. It will not have pollution or become tarnished.
“The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass.”
Jewelry lovers…be amazed!
Revelation 21:5, 23-26
“And He who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am MAKING all things new.”…”And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day – and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations.”
So country girl/city girl…
God will one day create the most magnificent city.
Those who belong to Him will dwell there with Him.
This city is free to all who belong to Him.
He paid the price on the cross of Calvary.
He took our sin upon Himself so that one day we could live with Him forever and ever.
You don’t need to save up, it’s already been paid for.
He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To Him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit this, and I will be his God and He will be my son (daughter).”
