Daddy’s Birthday

It’s fun to be the “grandma”.

I get to stand on the sidelines and watch.

I don’t have to make the tough calls or the decisions on matters of the heart.

I get to pray.

I get to give guidance if asked.

I also get to see the reward of my own children now doing the parenting.

I had the sweet pleasure of shopping with my grandsons for their daddy’s birthday present this week.

They were excited about the big day.

They knew that present #1 was to let daddy sleep in.

Present #2 was to make him a nice breakfast.

Present #3 was a balloon that they picked out for him.

The present to be unwrapped after the cake..

Well, the three year old insisted that daddy would love this package of new hot wheel cars and his younger brother insisted that daddy would like this new basketball.

Now you might read this and think “oh, that’s cute”.

But if you were there…standing in the aisle of the store…you would know that their main goal and objective was to go home and play with THEIR new toys.

They were allowed to get the new toys, but not as daddy’s birthday gift.

They were able to get the new toys as a result of filling up a sticker chart at home.

You know the kind…

Be a first time listener…earn a sticker

Show independence in getting yourself dressed…earn a sticker.

I was able to watch as their mommy talked them through this.

“Daddy probably does not want matchbox cars for his birthday, but it’s okay if you would like them as a reward for filling up your sticker chart.”

She was looking at the heart issue.

God does that.

We don’t fool Him either.

We pray…”Lord, if I had a bigger house…I’d use it for Your Glory”.

“Lord, if you’d provide for us to go on vacation…I’d walk the beach every morning praising Your Name”

“Lord, if you would just make my husband get it…well, I’d shine for you so much more”.

We don’t fool Him.

He sees what is really going on.

He too desires to get to the real issue.

It’s not that He wants to with hold the things we’ve asked for…it’s that He wants us to truly get Him, His character, His Glory, His purpose.

He also wants us to “get” us.

We need to see ourselves as we truly are.

I too can be like a one year old or a three year old in a toy aisle.

If left to myself…I’m pretty selfish.

I can twist and turn things around so that they “sound” right.

He doesn’t want me to get away with that and for that I’m thankful.

I want to be more.

I want to have a pure heart and clean motives.

It is only through Him and in Him that this will ever be possible.

Ezekiel 36:26

“I will give you a new heart and put a new Spirit in you”

Jeremiah 29:13

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”

Proverbs 4:23

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it”
