I love a good thunderstorm!
Memories of sitting on my grandmother’s porch during a thunderstorm fill me with warmth. Sitting on her porch swing with the rain coming down all around us and knowing I was safe under the shelter of her porch.
Memories of playing in my playroom as a small child, hearing the crack of thunder and the pelting rain bring up a memory of contentment. My mother loved to sew on rainy days. I can hear the hum of her sewing machine as we played “house” in our toy room.
When I taught first grade, my students often had wide eyes as fear crept into their minds during a loud thunderstorm at school. I could ease their fears as I shared how much I loved a nice thunderstorm. I’d share the cozy feelings from my childhood and as I did, I could see their fears slowly fading away.
My two-year-old grandson jumped into my lap several times yesterday as the thunder cracked loud outside his home as we played. Each time the thunder sounded, he’d run and jump onto my lap. I wish you could see the picture I see in my mind. He was shirtless most of the day. He loves to climb and climb he does…over couches, upon chairs and small tables…windowsills…my brave little guy. He looked so “cool” and so “brave” playing all day bare-chested, but a frightened little child he became at the crack of thunder!
He felt safe, however, in my arms.
He didn’t cry or scream. He’d just run to me and sit on my lap.
Life is meant to be this way with one much higher than a grandmother.
The Almighty God is our strong and fortified tower.
We are to run to Him and be safe.
I pray as these little ones grow that I can point them to the One that truly is The Strong Tower.
“The Name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
“For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.”
May you also run to the Strong Tower, Your Creator, the One Who loves you with an everlasting love!
“The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”
“But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear Him, and His righteousness with their children’s children”
