It was around 4pm on a fall day and the zoo was near closing. We wanted one last peek at the lions in the Pittsburgh Zoo.
They live in what looks to be a natural habitat and near a wall built of strong glass sits a small pond for them to drink from.
The zoo was empty of most of it’s visitors for the day.
I was there with my children and there was a man in his twenties who carried a large black garbage bag. He came and stood next to us to look again at the lions. That garbage bag grabbed the lion’s attention and they came ever so close to the glass window that separated them from us.
To be honest, it was too close for comfort for me.
The male lion opened his mouth wide and roared a roar that I have never heard since!
It was a roar that made your knees shake and the ground beneath you tremble!
The only thing that I could think of at the time was that this black garbage bag represented his food. Perhaps the zookeepers arrived with food in bags like this? I don’t know and I didn’t stick around long enough to ask!
It dawns on me that there is a lion.
He is called the Lion of Judah.
He is the real thing.
“Then one of the elders said to me, “do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Jesus is the Lion.
He is strong and He will roar.
He will come back and those that have not received His personal gift of salvation will indeed shake and be crumbled.
He desires that all of creation come to Him, but it has to be on His terms and not our own.
There is another that tries to be a lion, but he is a counterfeit.
“They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching for cover.”
He lies in wait, he lurks, he crouches and he desires to tear people apart with no one to rescue them.
“like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.”
The devil is real.
He’s invisible, but real.
God tells us to be alert. Be sober minded. Keep watch.
1 Peter 5:8
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
He is a counterfeit.
He is a lion wannabe.
He crouches, pounces, lurks, and maybe even roars.
But, he is NOT the Lion of Judah.
The Lion is often called the King of the Jungle.
Jesus is the real deal.
He is the real King.
It might not always look as though He is on a day to day basis because our world has been tainted by sin.
But, Jesus has overcome that sin by dying for each of us.
He is the Lion.
We are His cubs.
He is our protector and warrior.
His roar is real and there is none, not even the counterfeiter who will ever be able to dethrone Him!
